The 5th anniversary of the international Medtech & Pharma Platform (MPP) annual event took place in Basel on 16-17 October 2018. With 270 participants coming from 14 countries and a balance between representatives from pharma and medtech sectors, the annual event proved once again to be a great success.
The sessions of the 2018 MPP annual conference focused on “Global perspectives and trends at the intersection of pharma and medtech”, with presentations from renowned speakers on changing regulatory frameworks, digital health, innovative technologies, combined products development, transparency and management of patient data. Keynote speeches on major innovations in the two industries were given by Michael Doherty of Foundation Medicine and Charles Bridges from Actelion. In addition, Dr. Lukas Engelberger, Member of the Executive Council and Head of the Public Health Department of the Canton of Basel-City, welcomed the participants of the MPP 2018.
In her opening speech, Mrs. Fürst-Ladani, President of the MPP association and CEO of SFL Regulatory Affairs & Scientific Communication, highlighted the recent publication of a White Paper on the EU regulatory and policy framework for combined products, that will serve as basis for dialogue with the European institutions, competent authorities and other stakeholders.
The exhibition and 1-on-1 meetings
In parallel with the program, 30 exhibitors showcased their technologies and services in the exhibition hall. Numerous stimulating discussions and the foundations for future collaborations were facilitated with a partnering tool that allowed attendees to directly contact and arrange 1-on-1 meetings during the conference breaks and designated networking sessions with other participants. Over 330 of these 1-on-1 partnering meetings complimented the spontaneous discussions that took place throughout the two days, highlighting the great networking value of the event.
The Medtech & Pharma Platform (MPP) association
The MPP, founded in 2017, is an international industry association focusing specifically on combined products at the EU level. The MPP industry association has emerged from the annual event that celebrated its 5th anniversary this year.
With the goal to enhance the synergies between pharmaceutical and medtech companies, the association strives to improve access to innovative products for patients, by advocating on behalf of companies to reduce time to market for drugs, devices and combinations thereof. In order to achieve such goals, the MPP association formed a Working Group to proactively engage and communicate with EU institutions that shape the future policies for combined products.
Save the date for next year’s MPP annual event, which will take place on 24 – 25 October 2019 in Basel.
