Basel, 27 October 2019
The 6th Medtech & Pharma Platform (MPP) Annual Conference on “Pharma and medtech innovation in times of societal, technological and regulatory shifts” took place in Basel, Switzerland, on 24-25 October 2019.
The MPP annual conference, organized by the international Medtech & Pharma Platform Industry Association brought together key stakeholders from companies of the medtech, pharmaceutical and the information and communication technology (ICT) sector, as well as regulators and patients. During six sessions, which focused on key topic areas in the field, they discussed opportunities to enhance innovation, synergies, and cross-sectoral collaboration, as well as how ultimately these interactions could reduce the time to market for combined products and improve patients’ access to these innovative medical devices.
Over the two days, speakers addressed the impact of cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, innovative approaches and advances in development and manufacturing, regulatory changes like the new EU medical devices regulations (MDR) and GDPR, digital health and software, and precision devices and the patient perspective on combined products. The delegates also heard two keynotes presentations from Dr Sam Shah, Director of Digital Development for the digital unit of the English National Health Service (NHSX) and Dr. Hans Hofstraat, Vice-President and Research Program Manager at Philips' Chief Technology Office.
Delegates and expert speakers benefited from the opportunity to interact with 30 leading companies showcasing their products and services and used the 1-on-1 partnering tool to facilitate over 100 business meetings to discuss opportunities and future collaborations in this dynamically evolving field. The exceptional quality, response and interaction throughout the two days once again highlighted why this is the leading conference in the sector of combined products.
Ms. Fürst-Ladani, President of the MPP Association and CEO of SFL Regulatory Affairs & Scientific Communication commented: “We are very proud of the success of the 6th MPP annual conference in preparing such a high-quality and engaging program that provided attendees with the opportunity to exchange knowledge and connect with international industry and regulatory experts. In particular, I was excited by both the large number of senior professionals from international pharmaceutical, medtech and ICT companies, attending the event this year. This is very positive for the future as medical devices are becoming increasingly complex and tailored to the individual patient through the integration of advanced software and interconnectivity between other devices, wearables and healthcare professionals.”.
The event also coincided with two milestones for the MPP Association. The MPP Association was proud to announce the release of their latest publication, a “Reflection paper on regulatory uncertainties for co-packaged and cross-labelled drug-device combinations under the new Medical Devices Regulation (MDR)”. Furthermore, the MPP Association membership increased to twelve leading international companies, with the announcement of Boehringer-Ingelheim joining the existing MPP members. This further strengthens the MPP Association and will enhance their ongoing advocacy work and activities with European Union institutions, Swissmedic, associations and other relevant stakeholders in the field, to achieve the goal of supporting development of innovative combined products with a proportionate regulatory framework that facilitates access to new products that improve patient outcomes.
The MPP would like to thank the Program Committee, speakers, exhibitors and delegates for their participation, support and input over the two days, and is looking forward to welcoming everyone back on the 22‑23 October 2020, for the 2020 MPP Annual Conference.
